As Sony memory cards are getting cheaper and larger, it's also a lot easier to lose precious photographs on the card.

It's often a disaster if you mistakenly deleted some pictures, or the storage media became corrupted leaving all your data inaccessible.

You are told to regularly transfer the data from the card to your computer, but the time and effort required often hold you back. That's how data loss strikes in reality.

Your precious photographs got lost or inaccessible, but you don't have a backup.

What to do then?

Fortunately, technology makes it easier to rescue files deleted or lost from a Sony camera card, be it an SD, CF, memory stick or other type of flash cards.

In this article, we'll walk you through the whole process — getting your files back by using a third-party photo recovery software, which is by far the most effective solution.

What you'll need:

  • Your Sony camera memory card
  • A card reader or USB cable
  • A personal computer that runs on Windows or macOS
  • A digital photo recovery tool (see our review here)
  • A little bit time (15-20 minutes)

Let's jump right in!

First things first

In order to increase chances of recovery, the moment you found your photo and videos missing, you should immediately stop using the camera.

That means - do not take additional pictures using the camera. Because even if you've deleted something out if it due to accidental deletion, card reformatting, etc., the data remains for a while until they are fully written over.

Also, if you can, gently remove the card from your camera and put it in a safe place. Make sure the card won't suffer any physical or water damage.

Sony Photo Recovery Software

There is a wide range of solutions out there. We recommend Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery for two reasons: it's powerful as it tends to search more files than other alternatives due to its advanced scanning algorithm.

Plus, it has both a Windows and MacOS version, so you don't have to worry about compatibility issues when using it on your computer.

It's also worth noting that besides photos, the program also retrieves videos and voice recordings.

Below is a quick step-by-step guide.

4 Steps to Recover Files from a Sony Memory Card?

Before you start the recovery process, once again - do not save any new data to the same memory card, and make sure the card is clean and tidy.

Step 1: Connect your Sony memory card to a PC or Mac. If your card is full-size, directly insert it into the card adapter on your computer. If you use a MicroSD card, load it into a card reader first. You can also use a USB cable to connect.

Step 2: Get Stellar Photo Recovery and install the program on your computer. Next, open the program, on its main interface, click the 'Recover Photo, Audio & Video' button to get started.

Step 3: Highlight the disk drive your Sony storage media represents and click 'Scan' to continue. Now the application will perform a quick scan searching for those lost photos. Depending on the volume of your card, it may take extra minutes.

Step 4: Once the scanning is completed, preview the files by operating through the directory tree on the left part of the software interface. Then click 'Recover' and save them to another drive. Note: do not save recovered items back to your Sony camera card.

In case your Sony memory card is showing strange errors such as 'the card is not formatted, do you want to format it now?' — Try this: use the above Sony photo recovery tool to scan and recover from the error memory card for lost pictures. Then format the memory card on your computer (use the Quick Format option). In general, this will make the card work as normal. After that, retry the recovery software to see if you can retrieve more valuable data.

Hopefully, you have managed to rescue the lost files or be able to access them on your Sony camera. If you have any questions or problems during the process, feel free to let us know by leaving a comment below.
