A bonus feature on most platforms is rendering of PDF files to bitmap arrays. The poppler library provides all functionality to implement a complete PDF reader, including graphical display of the content. In R we can use pdf_render_page to render a page of the PDF into a bitmap, which can be stored as e.g.

So, I just got a new Surface Book to replace a MacBook Pro, and I am loving it mostly (especially the keyboard!). A few glitches, and Windows 10 is still a bit of a weird mix of elegant and ugly. There is one app I haven't been able to replace, OS X's Preview for PDFS. Drawboard is great for annotations, and Reader is nice and minimal, but I haven't been able to find any way to view the builtin table of contents in some of my PDFs in these apps. Is there a good app that has this feature? I don't mind if it doesn't allow annotations, Drawboard has me covered there.
